CDP Sound Examples – SEGMENTATION

Soundfile segmentation: drunken walk

SOURCE SOUND

voice backwards
(& stretched x2.5)

TRANSFORMATION

drunken walk

DESCRIPTION
~ CDP Function: EXTEND DRUNK ~

  • EXTEND DRUNK is very flexible. Designed originally by Miller Puckette, the key feature is that the place from which the segments are taken can move about.
  • Not only that, but three different parameters control the placement: the selection width (ambitus x2), the centre point of this selection width (locus), and the distance moved from segment to segment (step).
  • The CLOCK parameter controls the timing of the segments, and consequently their length as well.
  • The level of fragmentation is handled by relating the timing/length with the distance moved, but the location of the segments also needs to relate to what is happening where in the source.
  • With this source, soft whoosh sounds occur in the first 1.6 seconds, then a strong syllable forms between 1.6 and 2.6 seconds, and ss's moving to 'oh' sounds occur from about 4 seconds to the end. The LOCUS points keep within these sections of the source, but not in the same order.

KEY POINTS

  • The original vocal sound is REVERSED, TIME-STRETCHED 2.5 times and tidied up with DOVETAIL to form the source for this example.

  • Key sections of the source were located by playing FROM - TO in the source.

  • The LOCUS points emphasise the use of these key sections.

  • The breakpoint timings relate to an output duration specified as 15 seconds.

  • AMBITUS x2 is the range in seconds from within which the segments are taken.

  • STEP is the distance in the soundfile from one segment to the next.

  • CLOCK is the timing of the segments (and therefore also their length).

  • In the breakpoint files below, the left hand columns contain times in the output soundfile, the length of which is specified, and the right hand columns contain parameters which relate to durations etc. in the source soundfile.
